Ridgway Advance Merino Stud's annual ram auction, on the 13th August 2008, became one of the best on-property sales held in Australia
The expectations of the huge crowd that attended the Ridgway Advance ram sale, at Bordertown South Australia, were confirmed soon after the first call.
Bids flew from the outset and Landmark auctioneer Malcolm Scroop knocked down the first 10 rams for an impressive average of $3615.
And when the last of the 100 rams in the main auction had been sold, Ridgway Advance had set a new South Australian on-property record average of $2130.
Apart from the fact that 12 South Australian, Victorian & New South Wales Studs bought rams, the strength of stud & commercial bidding was a highlight.
Buyers all agreed they had been influenced by the fact that the Ridgway Advance rams all had typical large SA frames and plain bodies, combined with free-growing wool coverings, staple length and brightness - complemented by consistently impressive wool test figures.
Stud principles David & Karen Ridgway were well rewarded for their dedicated push towards a genotype featuring these Modern Merino traits.
"Having established a wool type that is needed in today's industry, we have never lost sight of the importance of dual-purpose qualities in our sheep" David said
Lot 3, earmarked by keen judges sparked a fierce bidding duel before being knocked down to leading NSW sheep consultant Bill Mildren, operating for the Daniell family White River Stud, Port Lincoln & the Uardry Stud, Hay, NSW for the $7500 top price.
Losing bidder was Dennis Dalla, Orrie Cowie, Warooka who bought two quality sires in the front row.
Uardry's manager also secured Lot 1, a long deep bodied ram and secured two other rams.
The second priced ram was an 18.1 micron ram offered as Lot 17, which was bought by Paul & Felicity Brady, Stavely Park for $7200.
Demand spilled over to the mini-auction pens, cleared 56 of 68 rams for an average of $720.
Selling agents, Landmark reported that there were 80 registered buyers and the passed in rams and more private selection rams had been sold by the end of the day.
